Counselor's Corner: Mrs. Miller
Welcome to the Counselor's Corner!  I hope to keep parents and students informed about what is going on in the Counseling Department throughout the year.  Please check my page often for updates and resources that can assist you with your student.  The focus of the counseling program at Avon Intermediate School West (AISW) is to provide  pro-active, comprehensive services that meet the needs of all children.

Services available include:

Individual Counseling:  One on one counseling services are available to children for a variety of issues. These services can be provided on a weekly or as needed basis. Referrals can come from parents, teachers, staff, or the student. Counselor/ Student confidentiality is honored at all times except in  cases of possible harm to self or others and reports of abuse. Students are encouraged to discuss their feelings and concerns with their parents.

Group Counseling:  Group Counseling encourages children to help each other, share ideas, respect others, and develop positive skills that will last them a lifetime. Divorce Support and Personal Growth groups are offered at AISW.

Classroom Guidance:  Helping kids learn the skills they need for life!

Middle School NORTH Visit

Attention 6th grade Parents:

Avon Middle School North 7th grade counselor, Mrs. Ornelas, and principal, Mr. Perkins, will be visiting our school on February 6th to discuss course selections for 7th grade.  Your child will bring home 2 items.  The first is a YELLOW course selection sheet that requires your child to choose the courses he/she wishes to take in 7th grade.  This course selection sheet is due no later than Tuesday, February 21  to the intermediate school.  The second item is the 7th grade course description guide, which briefly details course information.  This packet does not need to be returned to school.  Please keep it for your records.  If you have any questions about scheduling for 7th grade, please feel free to contact Mrs. Ornelas at AMS North at 544-5500.

6th Grade Lesson for December/January
The 6th graders were presented a lesson on Sexual Harassment.  The goals of the presentation were to alert middle school students to the behaviors that constitute sexual harassment, to make it clear to them why it is wrong, and to give strategies for handling sexual harassment if they are a victim or witness.

5th Grade Lesson for December/January
This past month, students have been discussing Learning Styles. 5th graders learned about the three learning styles – visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. They also took a quiz to discover what their learning style is and conducted an experiment to see how the styles work. Students who know their learning style can adjust their study habits appropriately and get the most out of learning! Ask your son or daughter about their learning style and how they work with it.
